Documentation for vehicle conversions

Context

The MAN TGE is built in cooperation with Volkswagen, while the after-sales business runs through MAN. Many configuration options that customers can officially order in the configurator are converted at the MAN VAN Modification Center.

Starting point

These conversions are currently not publicly documented. Workshops therefore work on vehicles that deviate from the base vehicle without finding the matching documentation in the MAN Service Portal. With the electrically converted TGE, the topic is gaining additional importance.

My role

The project was officially handed over to me, and I am responsible for it from requirements gathering to implementation.

Approach

I am developing an extension of the portal functions with significantly more capabilities for uploading, viewing and downloading conversion documentation. It is being built for the concrete use cases first, but designed so that other MAN vehicles and converters benefit from it as well. I have documented the status quo, the implementation plan is in place, and through workshops with all parties involved I am gathering the requirements before anything gets built.

What I take away

Whoever gathers requirements properly at the interface before building saves many times the effort during implementation. And a solution designed from the start to reach beyond its first use case does not have to be rebuilt later.
